Rolling snowballs, deep penetration when you step or ski, and small natural slides are clear signals that the Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary is losing strength. After a clear, cold night the surface often freezes into a strong supporting Layer of hard-compacted snow resulting from a melt-freeze process or wind.EAWS glossary, and conditions are favourable in the early morning. After a warm, overcast night, the problem may be present from the start of the day. Plan early returns and watch the runout zones below you.
Easy to spot - the snow is fresh. Look at recent avalanche activity in similar terrain, and pay attention to how much new snow has fallen in the last three days. Critical loading depends on temperature, wind, and what was on the surface before the storm. SLF advises waiting until the Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary has had time to bond before committing to steep terrain in fresh snow.
As a consequence of the rain, the likelihood of wet avalanches being released will increase.
As a consequence of the rain, the likelihood of wet avalanches being released will increase in particular below approximately 2200 m, especially on steep west, north and east facing slopes. In these regions natural avalanches are to be expected, even large ones in isolated cases. In addition the fresh wind slabs in Areas above approximately 3000 m (particularly glaciated areas).EAWS glossary are capable of being triggered in some cases, in particular on near-ridge slopes. The Locations delineated by aspect or altitude where avalanches can trigger and people or objects are at risk.EAWS glossary for dry avalanches are to be found on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2200 m. Such avalanche prone locations are difficult to recognise. Especially transitions from a shallow to a deep Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary are unfavourable.
Outlook
→Constant avalanche danger
14 April 2026
Slight decrease in danger of wet avalanches as the snowfall level drops.
Snowpack & Weather
Snowpack▾
Below approximately 1800 m only a little snow is lying. At higher altitudes there are 30 to 80 cm of snow, and even as much as 150 cm in some localities. The surface of the Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary will cool hardly at all during the overcast night and will already be soft in the early morning. Up to 2200 m rain will fall. The rain will give rise to a loss of strength within the snowpack especially on steep shady slopes. 20 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 2200 m. As a consequence of a strong wind, sometimes easily released wind slabs will form in Areas above approximately 3000 m (particularly glaciated areas).EAWS glossary. Steep west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2400 m: Large-grained Snowpack layer in which the crystals are poorly bonded and the layer has the potential to fail. Typical crystals in dry weak layers causing avalanches are : precipitation particles; surface hoar; faceted crystals; hollow crystals; graupel. Generally >1mm in size, loose grains with few bonds Wet weak layers can be formed by all snow crystal/grain types.EAWS glossary exist in the bottom section of the Snow layers deposited from earlier precipitation, prior to fresh fallen snow. Old snow layers consist of metamorphosed snow crystals.EAWS glossary.
