Avalanche Problems

Avalanche Activity

Wet snow requires caution.

As a consequence of new snow and wind, wind slabs formed in the last few days at high altitudes and in high Alpine regionsAreas above approximately 3000 m (particularly glaciated areas).EAWS glossary. As a consequence of warming there will be a gradual increase in the avalanche danger. On very steep slopes the moist avalanches can be released naturally and reach medium size in isolated cases. Individual avalanche prone locationsLocations delineated by aspect or altitude where avalanches can trigger and people or objects are at risk.EAWS glossary are to be found on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2600 m. Avalanches can be released, mostly by large loads and reach medium size.

Outlook

→ Constant avalanche danger

1 May 2026

The avalanche danger will persist.

Snowpack & Weather

Snowpack ▾

Below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying. The spring-like weather conditions will give rise to rapid moistening of the snowpackSnow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary. The surface of the snowpack will only just freeze and will soften quickly. Steep west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2500 m: Faceted weak layersSnowpack layer in which the crystals are poorly bonded and the layer has the potential to fail. Typical crystals in dry weak layers causing avalanches are : precipitation particles; surface hoar; faceted crystals; hollow crystals; graupel. Generally >1mm in size, loose grains with few bonds Wet weak layers can be formed by all snow crystal/grain types.EAWS glossary exist in the bottom section of the old snowpackSnow layers deposited from earlier precipitation, prior to fresh fallen snow. Old snow layers consist of metamorphosed snow crystals.EAWS glossary.
