Easy to spot - the snow is fresh. Look at recent avalanche activity in similar terrain, and pay attention to how much new snow has fallen in the last three days. Critical loading depends on temperature, wind, and what was on the surface before the storm. SLF advises waiting until the Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary has had time to bond before committing to steep terrain in fresh snow.

Field notes

Rolling snowballs, deep penetration when you step or ski, and small natural slides are clear signals that the Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary is losing strength. After a clear, cold night the surface often freezes into a strong supporting Layer of hard-compacted snow resulting from a melt-freeze process or wind.EAWS glossary, and conditions are favourable in the early morning. After a warm, overcast night, the problem may be present from the start of the day. Plan early returns and watch the runout zones below you.

Avalanche Activity

Increase in avalanche danger in the course of the day.

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be only a slight increase in the danger of wet avalanches. Wet avalanches can in isolated cases be released by a single winter sport participant, especially on very steep sunny slopes especially above approximately 2500 m, this also applies on very steep shady slopes below approximately 2500 m in Usually a steep, elongated, eroded trench; typically prone to snowdrift accumulation.EAWS glossary and Rounded or elongated concavity; typically tending to accumulate snowdrift.EAWS glossary. In isolated cases avalanches are medium-sized. As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of The abrupt release of a slab of snow on a mountain slope. After crack initiation and crack propagation in a weak layer the released slab comprises 3 elements: The weak layer, the gliding horizon and the slab. If the slope angle is steep enough, the slab will glide down. If the slope is not steep enough, the slab will settle down on the failed weak layer. Possibly a whumpf sound will follow due to air pressed out of the weak layer. The fracture line will be sharp edged.EAWS glossary being released will increase gradually on very steep sunny slopes at high altitudes and in Areas above approximately 3000 m (particularly glaciated areas).EAWS glossary, in the regions exposed to a lot of new snow especially. Moist loose snow avalanches are to be expected as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones. Snowpack layer in which the crystals are poorly bonded and the layer has the potential to fail. Typical crystals in dry weak layers causing avalanches are : precipitation particles; surface hoar; faceted crystals; hollow crystals; graupel. Generally >1mm in size, loose grains with few bonds Wet weak layers can be formed by all snow crystal/grain types.EAWS glossary in the Snow layers deposited from earlier precipitation, prior to fresh fallen snow. Old snow layers consist of metamorphosed snow crystals.EAWS glossary can be released in isolated cases and mostly by large additional loads in particular on very steep shady slopes, in particular above approximately 2500 m.

Outlook

Constant avalanche danger

1 May 2026

A clear night will be followed in the early morning by favourable conditions generally. Gradual increase in danger of wet avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

Snowpack & Weather

Snowpack
In some localities 15 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last two days above approximately 2600 m. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be good over a wide area. The surface of the Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary will freeze to form a strong Layer of hard-compacted snow resulting from a melt-freeze process or wind.EAWS glossary and will soften during the day. Shady slopes above approximately 2500 m: Faceted Snowpack layer in which the crystals are poorly bonded and the layer has the potential to fail. Typical crystals in dry weak layers causing avalanches are : precipitation particles; surface hoar; faceted crystals; hollow crystals; graupel. Generally >1mm in size, loose grains with few bonds Wet weak layers can be formed by all snow crystal/grain types.EAWS glossary exist in the bottom section of the Snow layers deposited from earlier precipitation, prior to fresh fallen snow. Old snow layers consist of metamorphosed snow crystals.EAWS glossary at elevated altitudes. Below approximately 2000 m no snow is lying. Between approximately 2000 and 2500 m only a little snow is now lying, in particular on very steep shady slopes in Usually a steep, elongated, eroded trench; typically prone to snowdrift accumulation.EAWS glossary and Rounded or elongated concavity; typically tending to accumulate snowdrift.EAWS glossary.
