Field notes

Rolling snowballs, deep penetration when you step or ski, and small natural slides are clear signals that the Snow deposited on the ground in a multiplicity of layers.EAWS glossary is losing strength. After a clear, cold night the surface often freezes into a strong supporting Layer of hard-compacted snow resulting from a melt-freeze process or wind.EAWS glossary, and conditions are favourable in the early morning. After a warm, overcast night, the problem may be present from the start of the day. Plan early returns and watch the runout zones below you.

Avalanche Activity

Slight increase in danger of wet avalanches in the course of the day.

As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be only a slight increase in the danger of wet avalanches. Wet avalanches can in isolated cases be released by people, especially on very steep sunny slopes above approximately 2500 m, this also applies on very steep shady slopes below approximately 2500 m in Usually a steep, elongated, eroded trench; typically prone to snowdrift accumulation.EAWS glossary and Rounded or elongated concavity; typically tending to accumulate snowdrift.EAWS glossary. In isolated cases avalanches are medium-sized. Snowpack layer in which the crystals are poorly bonded and the layer has the potential to fail. Typical crystals in dry weak layers causing avalanches are : precipitation particles; surface hoar; faceted crystals; hollow crystals; graupel. Generally >1mm in size, loose grains with few bonds Wet weak layers can be formed by all snow crystal/grain types.EAWS glossary in the Snow layers deposited from earlier precipitation, prior to fresh fallen snow. Old snow layers consist of metamorphosed snow crystals.EAWS glossary can be released in isolated cases and mostly by large additional loads in particular on very steep shady slopes, in particular above approximately 2500 m. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. This is the final hazard map for the winter 2025/26. Current information and announcements are posted on our blog. We wish all users of the Euregio Avalanche Report an accident-free summer season.

Outlook

Constant avalanche danger

4 May 2026

The early morning will see favourable conditions generally. Slight increase in danger of wet avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

Snowpack & Weather

Snowpack
Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be good over a wide area. Shady slopes above approximately 2500 m: Faceted Snowpack layer in which the crystals are poorly bonded and the layer has the potential to fail. Old snow layers consist of metamorphosed snow crystals.EAWS glossary at elevated altitudes. Below approximately 2000 m no snow is lying. Between approximately 2000 and 2500 m only a little snow is now lying.
